Great piece. I also connected with my mother for the first time when she was in her late 90s and then I took care of her until shortly before her 103rd birthday when she died. I am so glad i was able to let go of my anger and resentment for not being the mother i thought I needed and we could laugh and enjoy every moment. Now i think of her daily and try to remember the final lessons of acceptance i learned from her.
