I did attempt to listen in a couple of times as a youngster. You had to keep your finger on the lever that came up when you picked up the phone, then very very slowly remove it so there was no 'click' sound. I vaguely remember being challenged as well. Something like 'whoever's on this line better hang up now.' Our older female neighbor listened in regularly.
