When I went to Guatemala in 1979, my parents sent me a telegram two weeks later to ask if I had arrived safely. To call them, I had to go to the phone company office, wait in line for 30-60 minutes or more, only to often be told that the lines to the US were not working. I didn't mind the isolation ... liked it, in fact.
